Chic, but make it Spooky

It's here! Spooky season, and you are full on living the fall life. Halloween is right around the corner, and it's time to decorate. You start to grab your halloween decor, & begin to hang things here & there. All of a sudden you look around and realize, your house looks more like

a haunted mansion rather than that chic halloween isle you walked through at target.
As a designer I make the same mistake. I have a vision in my head, then next thing I know I've created a random collection of decor that isn't executing that cute vision I originally planned.
Halloween is that hard holiday, because there are a lot of different takes on it. First, you got the spooky side, second the gore, third the cute fall side, or fourth a mix of them all. So how do you execute the perfect house decor without falling into that trap of mixing them all and causing your neighbors & friends to think Halloween has caused you to become bat crazy?
Let's discuss some tips and tricks shall we?
Choose a theme!
THIS is very important. Choose a theme, and then most important of all. STICK with that theme. I know, I know, it's my problem area also. You start to gather your decor, then next thing you know you have ghosts and a scarecrow and you have no idea how to blend the two. Tip, go on Pinterest and create a board specifically for the look you are going for. Look at it on your phone when picking out items at the store. Jot down highlights from the theme to stick with. This will help you keep your direction, even if it is a blend of styles. This leads us to our next point. What are some ideas for theme's? Below are some fun inspiration ideas to use for your own home!
Spooky but Chic
Halloween focused on fall
Scary & Dark, House of the Dragon style
Less is more
I know, the dreaded "less is more speech". With decor this is a large key to making sure not only you follow your direction, but it doesn't look like your home has thrown up Halloween. By focusing on your theme and direction, this should help to weed out over stuffing your house with decor. I like to use the theory, 1 to 3. Meaning for every 3 surfaces, I only have 1 that has decor items on them. This can be more than one decor piece, depending on the size of the surface area.
Reuse
Lastly, try to find pieces you can reuse. We all have a budget right? Well, at least one we try to aim for. Halloween is an easy holiday to overlap with Thanksgiving. Unless you are one that tends to jump right to Christmas! ;) Try to find a way to have pieces overlap so you don't have to constantly change decor once each holiday is done. Trust me, even the spooky items can sometimes blend into thanksgiving. Those candle sticks? Hello, our table needs some Harry Potter vibes with our turkey meal!
Overall the biggest takeaway you should have is to HAVE FUN.
Decorating is about exploring a creative side & putting out items that make you smile & feel at home. So if all you do is put out a skull & call it a day. Feel accomplished, because you've added your own touch to your home!
Hope you all have a fun and spooky Halloween!
